In a world where there is so much emphasis on detoxing our physical bodies yet so little emphasis on ways to detox your soul, here are some ideas
Whether it be pollution, chemicals, or our intake of artificial substances and foods that aren’t necessarily good for us; people in today’s society can easily become bogged down in our bodies.
One of the solutions that we have formed is to “detoxify” our bodies. We form a plan to intake more things that will cleanse our bodies from this build-up of toxic substance and (attempt) to intake less of the “yucky” stuff (even though it tastes oh-so yummy!!).
While searching online for detoxes that were sure to cleanse my body, the thought crossed me:
“If the physical body can become weighed down and filled with toxic substance in need for a cleanse, is the same true for our ‘spiritual bodies’?”
The answer is YES!!!!!!! Our spiritual bodies can easily become weighed down and “heavy” if we continuously intake things that are toxic to our souls. This can come in the form of depression, loneliness, anxiety, and a suffering relationship with Jesus Christ, and many other ways!
So here are 7 ways you can detox your spiritual life!
Our prayer lives are our mainline to getting in touch with God Almighty himself! If we are feeling weighed down or alone there is no better friend to tell than Him! God promises that he will never leave or forsake us. He is closer than a brother. We can cast all our cares on him for he cares for us!
Jesus wants us to run to him for everything, no matter what the situation!
It seems silly to think that he can’t handle our feelings and emotions! He created them after all!
I AM SERIOUS ABOUT THIS ONE!
Find a quiet place where you will not be distracted where no one can hear your possible “ugly crying” session (I’m not the only one. . . right?)
Turn all your cellular techno-stuff OFF (or on silent in case your like me and like to jam out to Jonathan and Melissa Helser during a prayer session: TOTALLY RECOMMEND THEM).
Then talk to Jesus like He is sitting right there (Because He kinda is. . . ).
Trust me. Prayer fixes so much.
3. Listen to Worship Music
As I stated earlier, I love me some Helsers. They rock.
Worship music has a way of quieting the chaos that goes on around us and inside us. It brings our focus to the God who longs for us to have Him ever-present in our thoughts!
I recommend anything by Elevation, Kari Jobe, or Bethel (I’m a sucker for Bethel).
As long as it can make you lose track of time and focus on Jesus, I recommend it.
*disclaimer* if you are a young upcoming Christian, it is best to ask your pastor or a believing parent about the history of fasting as well as the aspects of participating in a fast.
Fasting is choosing to abstain from something you really enjoy as a way of putting a huge neon sign over your head that tells God “HEY! Your more important to me than this thing I give my attention!”
Fasting is also a way to “crucify your flesh” as the Bible states. That means that you are telling your earthly man that Jesus reigns and is more important than my desires.
So what does one fast? Anything that gets in the way of our view from God, really. Some skip food. Others abstain from using social media or watching T.V. (calm down, it’s not that hard. . . so I’m told). Whatever you can think of that has the possibility of becoming an “idol” in your life is something you should fast.
Is this me telling you what I think you should fast? Nope. Should you fast just because I said so? Nuh-uh.
You should only fast if you understand that fasting is a form of worship to God. Fasting is a very private and intimate thing between you and Jesus. Don’t tell everyone your fasting (*ahem* Pharisees).
It is best to tell no one except for a parent if you are still in underage or the person preparing your meals.
5. Detox Toxic People.
In our lives, it is inevitable to cross other people whether they be bad or good. It is, however, possible to choose who we invest our time and emotions in.
There is a rumor stating that you become like the 5 people who spend the most time with. For some of us that would be our family. For others, our beloved co-workers.
Toxic people are the ones who search for every opportunity to complain or gossip. They are the people we let influence or behavior and decisions negatively.
Toxic people WILL be detrimental to your Spirit if you allow them to influence you.
Now I’m, not saying we shun these people and refuse to talk to them. We are Christians who are called to love these people and show them Jesus’s love. Well then how do we detoxify them from our lives?
We stop having fellowship with them.
A friend of mine once told me that their is a difference between acquaintanceship and fellowship.
An acquaintance is someone you chat with and may even go to lunch every once in a while with.
A fellowship is a connection you share with someone who shares a common belief system and is in a position to influence your every day life. Think Jesus, or your mom, or your closest girlfriend who can lounge on the couch watching your favorite chick-flicks talking about everything and anything. That’s fellowship.
Toxic People are the last people we want fellowship with. Remove them and their baggage and you will instantly feel lighter!!
6. Meet up with a Girlfriend.
That girlfriend who can lounge on the couch watching your favorite chick-flicks talking about everything and anything with you?
Call her up.
Go shopping. Grab coffee. Get with her and just spend time talking about each others lives! Confide in Her. Let her confide in you! FELLOWSHIP WITH HER!!
Fellowship has a beautiful way of helping us “unload” all the junk we’ve had to carry throughout our week, month, year, life, etc.. It reminds us we are not alone and that we have someone on our side!
7. Take a Nature walk/Run/Photo-shoot
Nature is God’s gift to man that always seems to be my “reset” button. If my mind is full of chaos and I feel like I am completely overwhelmed, taking a walk outdoors is an immediate head-clearer. I feel intimate with God when I am walking in the forest or sitting in a garden.
Walking not your thing? Document God’s wonderful creation through art or photography!
Whenever our hearts feel weighted by this life and we need a “detox”, these 7 things are ways to achieve a cleansed soul!
Do you have suggestions of things that help you “reset” and get your spiritual eyes back in focus? Leave me a comment so I to can utilize these!
